Islay is one of the most beautiful of the Hebridean islands and is famous among bird watchers and especially whiskey connoisseurs. There are whiskey distilleries all over the island and Lagavulin Distillery is only 5 minutes walk from the house. Laphroaig and Ardberg are both within walking distance. Most of the distilleries offer visitor tours, which are very interesting and finish with a taste of the end product.
There are numerous sandy beaches and opportunities for fishing, kayaking, windsurfing and walking. The Machrie golf course is also a well known feature of Islay and there is a swimming pool in the main town, Bowmore, which is housed in a disused distillery warehouse and heated by surplus heat from Bowmore distillery. There are many sites of historical interest including the famous Kildalton Cross which dates from the 9th Century.
